Challenge:
MassTech approached SHEPPiD with a functional prototype of their instrument but needed a professionally designed enclosure that reflected their brand and met strict usability and technical constraints. The system had to meet IP21 requirements for dust and water ingress protection, while remaining lightweight and compact enough to be easily transported by a single user—an uncommon feature in this market. Additionally, MassTech sought to establish a cohesive visual identity, starting with the development of a new logo and a product design language that aligned with their evolving brand.
 
Solution:
SHEPPiD worked closely with MassTech to define a modern, professional design language that strikes a balance between brand expression and performance. A new company logo was created to align with this refreshed identity. To meet the strict size and weight limitations, the enclosure was designed using machined aluminum, ensuring durability, reduced mass, and the ability to achieve complex geometry for improved ergonomics. Our design centred on user experience and portability, featuring a standout development: a fully integrated handle that adds zero volume to the unit. Full-scale mockups were used to validate ergonomics and optimize usability throughout the development process.
 
Outcome:
SHEPPiD delivered a compact, rugged, and visually refined enclosure that elevated MassTech’s prototype into a market-ready instrument. The final product is portable, brand-consistent, and designed for real-world use—meeting both IP21 protection standards and the demanding expectations of field-based scientific professionals. The integrated handle design and carefully engineered geometry make the instrument easy to carry, setting it apart in a traditionally bulky category.
