IMRIS | SYMBIS

IMRIS | SYMBIS

Challenge:

Director Adam Shepperdley led the IMRIS SYMBIS project as Lead Industrial Designer at Kangaroo Group (now Starfish Medical), designing enclosures around IMRIS’ core technology for a robot-controlled neurosurgical console. The project emphasized an enhanced user experience, refined workflows, optimal ergonomics, clean aesthetics, and streamlined manufacturability—all while maintaining visual harmony with IMRIS’ VISIUS iCT system, which is already in use globally.

Solution:

Adam Shepperdley spearheaded the design development and detailed engineering of all external enclosures using Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM). His responsibilities included top-level CAD model management, design coordination across multidisciplinary teams, and the hands-on assembly of alpha and beta prototypes—resulting in durable, user-centric, and production-ready enclosure systems.

Outcome:
A key value delivered was Adam Shepperdley’s ability to manage the complex commercialization process successfully—coordinating seamlessly with both internal and external engineering teams. The project demanded careful ergonomic and UX considerations within a tight footprint, navigating a dense technical layout with numerous moving components. Despite these challenges, the design met both functional and aesthetic goals. A secondary achievement was the complete hands-on assembly of the alpha and beta functional prototypes, which brought the product to life and demonstrated its real-world performance, as visible in the operational video linked below.
